New CMPD chief to hold news conference Monday

Episode Summary

Estella Patterson, who previously served as Chief of Police in Raleigh, will officially begin her new role on Dec. 1.

Episode Notes

The city of Charlotte announced Friday Estella Patterson will serve as the next Chief of Police for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

City Manager Marcus Jones made the announcement in an internal email to CMPD staff, saying the decision followed an extensive search and input from officers and community members. Patterson, who previously served as Chief of Police in Raleigh, will officially begin her new role on Dec. 1.

“Public safety is the most important service our organization provides to our city,” Jones wrote. “Choosing a police chief is one of the most important responsibilities I hold.”

Jones said he aimed to find a balance between a leader who knows CMPD’s values and someone who brings outside experience and fresh perspective. Patterson spent 25 years with CMPD before becoming Raleigh’s police chief in 2021.
